The community-focused music and arts collective VooKoo, have been making huge waves across Bristol since 2022, bringing people together through a multitude of mediums; from open mics and raves, to clothes swaps and markets.
Last Friday, I ventured down to the Southbank Club to experience the wonderful world of VooKoo, as they opened their doors for their hugely celebrated First Friday Live – for the final time.
Creating space for every genre of music is their superpower, and that’s the reason why they have carved out such a well-respected name for themselves within the city's music scene; no matter what kind of music you’re into, Vookoo has a night for you.
I found myself at the Southbank Club ready to experience the sounds of Psychoacoustic Goat and Lords of the Veg Funk, an eclectic combination of disco, funk, hip-hop, and psychedelic folk.
Stepping into the warm embrace of the venue, I knew this night would be special. The groovy beats provided by resident DJs lingered in the air as people began to fill the room with good energy. Immediately clocking a variety of incredible vegetable themed costumes and vibrant outfits, it’s safe to say that VooKoo have created a space for artists, performers, and music lovers alike to come together and let loose.
Art pieces were thoughtfully dotted throughout the room, and I found myself smiling at one in particular: ‘Connection is everything.’ It was painted on one board against a wall – VooKoo’s memorable mantra.
Soon enough, Psychoacoustic Goat graced the stage, blessing the evening with their psychedelic sounds. The dynamic duo delivered an outstanding performance, taking the crowd on an interactive journey through their weird and wonderful world of goat folk with their dark fantasy vibes.
Their combination of acoustic bass and viola, alongside an assortment of FX pedals made for an act like no other, and filled the room with high energy stomps, spins and happy bleats. If you don’t know them already, Psychoacoustic Goat are a pair to watch out for.
But that wasn’t the end of the whimsical evening, for the headliners, Lords of the Veg Funk, sashayed through the eager crowd with cabbages in hand – their green gospel was about to begin.
Suddenly, I was on a trip through a world of leafy greens, and a rather sensual one at that. The talent oozing from each band member was unreal, and made for a truly unique experience.
The sounds of funk, disco, and hip-hop radiated throughout, and it was impossible to not bounce along to the energy they were creating. They’re spreading the word of the cabbage and spreading it well, turning the crowd into a pulsing wave of good, green energy.
Having only formed this year, they’ve understandably already made a huge name for themselves, performing across the city as well as bringing their aphorisms to festivals like Boomtown. Much of this is thanks to their effortlessly hilarious presence, musicianship, and ability to get a crowd moving. It’s sacred, it’s steamy, it’s sexy - and I’m so glad I got to witness their sermon thanks to VooKoo.
As the Lords of the Veg Funk say - Kalelujah!
