Discovering new festivals by word of mouth isn’t that common, but back in the depths of winter, a friend passed on news of a unique event far from the fields we know and love…
“This wicked festival in Portugal - 7 days of dub music on two sides of a river you can swim across. Roots music powered by hand-built soundsystems.” I started to imagine this sunny musical oasis in northern Portugal. Now, as summer approaches and Glastonbury Festival looms on the horizon, we’re beginning to explore newer festivals with refreshing ethos, strong sustainability, and interactive yet educational workshops all linking back to sound system culture.
After 3 successful years, the pioneering HIM Dub Festival returns to Portugal. Hosting Sound Systems, Workshops, Therapies, Conferences, House of Rastafari, Market, river beach and a kid’s area. A special element of Him Dub is its sense of obligation for the heart & root of Dub music which serves as the cultural and spiritual foundation for this genre of music. You can discover for yourself at the House of Rastafari through talks and workshops covering how dub is made.
When the dub rides through you in the dance, you feel uplifted. Held not only by the music, but everyone and everything around you. Nestled in to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the 7 day festival weaves its way through the sandy banks and overhanging trees of the River Côa.
The three stages, The River Station, Dub Temple (Nomad Embassy Sound System) and Roots Garden (Mindel Reggae Sound System) are built into the landscape emanating soulful tunes from the wooden speaker boxes through the trees and across the water. From a full 7 days of dub music with over 60 international artists performing over the week you will experience a multitude of dub and reggae music with the likes of Hitman & Fiza Sound System, Jah Militant, King Alpha, and Sister Queen Sheeba, to name a few. You can check out the full line up here: https://himdubfestival.com/index.php/line-up-soundsystem/
Sustainability is another core element of HIM Dub. Through their eco vision you will be provided with a hygiene pack, supplementing organic soaps and toothpaste handmade in Portugal which have no impact on the environment and would save 80kg of potentially harmful/non-biodegradable soaps and toothpaste to the land. Plates and tableware that are provided are biodegradable and all of the cups are reusable. The compost produced by the festival will be handed back to the farmers that provided the fruits and vegetables you ate.
Inside the festival you can attend workshops about urban permaculture to grow your understanding of sustainable practices and how to implement them into your life.
Throughout the week there will be conferences, talks and reasonings guided by artists and producers from the festival. You can drop into these sessions that promote cultural interaction, sharing the beginnings and craft of dub. Therapy and wellness talks will allow you to express yourself and understand others holding the space around you. There will also be talks on Rastafari and dub culture and local culture involving the people and land of your surroundings.
Him Dub is creating an open space physically and in our minds where we feel accepted to talk and share, to come together with good music, good food and nature.
We are very much looking forward to dancing our feet off in front of some heavyweight sound systems and jumping in the river, exploring the essence of dub music and sound system culture and sharing a week of good times with you lovely lot!
Be sure to grab a ticket here and join us in the beautiful, sunny land of Portugal just before the winter months of 2025 hit.
See you there! X
